A mother and her child having voluntary counselling and testing at CHAIN
Treatment Literacy

The high rates of transmission of HIV result largely from failure to use the available and effective prevention strategies and tools. Therefore, this year CHAIN has joined other stakeholders in the fight against HIV and AIDS, to better contribute to the National Strategic Plan goal of the prevention thematic service area.

Under HIV prevention, CHAIN runs national and community sensitization activities which include raising awareness of the great dangers HIV and AIDS, HIV counseling and testing, HIV prevention through sports, condom distribution, organizing seminars, trainings and provision of Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials. Sensitization at community level is through music, dance and drama. This is meant to reach illiterate members of the communities.

Communtiy outreach and hospital visits are also carried out by CHAIN staff and volunteers. Twice a month, CHAIN volunteers and staff carry out visits to homes of people living with HIV ,orphans and vulnerable children and their guardians in Kawempe division. During these visits counselling and psychosocial support is provided. Interaction discussions are carried out on HIV and AIDS/TB/Malaria prevention treatment and care, adherence to medication, stigma and discrimination. CHAIN volunteers and Staff also help with domestic work such as cleaning peoples’ homes, washing clothes, dishes and cooking for the families. This is done in order to promote good hygiene and sanitation. During these visits CHAIN provides nutritional supplements, and other basic needs like soap, blankets, lanterns, basins etc. The households also received blankets and mosquito nets. They were trained on how to use mosquito nets to prevent malaria.
